The Marine Corps traces its founding to 10 November 1775, when the Second Continental Congress raised the first Marine battalions at Tun Tavern in Philadelphia. From that tavern the Corps went on to prove itself in some of the hardest fighting in American history - the Banana Wars in Haiti, the defense of the Peking legations in China, the jungles of the Pacific and Southeast Asia, and two decades of combat across the Middle East.
