The Raptor

Conceived in 1981 to replace the F-15 Eagle, the F-22 Raptor was designed by Lockheed Martin (with Boeing and Pratt & Whitney) to counter advanced Soviet threats. After defeating the Northrop YF-23 in the Advanced Tactical Fighter competition, the Raptor made its first flight in 1997 and formally entered service in 2005.

The jet is recognized as the world's first fifth-generation air superiority fighter, merging stealth, "supercruise" (supersonic flight without afterburners), and extreme agility into a single airframe. Despite its unmatched capabilities, its high cost and shifting geopolitical priorities led the Air Force to end production at 195 aircraft. The assembly line officially closed in 2011, and federal law prohibits the export of the Raptor's classified technologies to other countries.
